Mia and Dinah talk about the mindset and philosophies of various decluttering experts.
This is the first of two episodes discussing decluttering. It focuses on the advice from decluttering experts.
Mia and Dinah researched some of the experts and provide summaries of:
- Kim Carruthers’ book Less is More
- Marie Kondo’s book The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up
- The Minimalists blog, podcast and Netflix movie
- Francine Jay’s book The Joy of Less.
They then reflect on the different approaches to decluttering including:
- Category by category (e.g. books, clothes)
- Room by room or zone (e.g. kitchen, bathroom, pantry, cupboard)
- Time method (e.g. one hour a day or 21day blitz)
- Number of items per day (e.g. 1 item on day 1, 2 items on day 2 etc)
- Adopting the ‘one in one out’ rule.
The benefits of decluttering include:
- Freeing up more physical space
- Making it faster to find things and put them away
- Saving money by not re-buying things you can’t find or forgot you have
- Removing the emotional weight and guilt of living with clutter.
